What a pleasant surprise, re-united with an old friend and met two lovely new ones. This one was a bit nerve wracking, because till quite late I wasn't sure how many people would respond and actually show up. There was a last minute cancellation and then very fortunately a last minute addition.

The evening took unexpected turns and without planning or meaning to, the conversation turned first to politics and then religion; always interesting to put it mildly. It was very lively, and because it came up during dessert I believe people remembered what they ate! I have been to dinners at homes and restaurants where because the conversation and discussions have been soanimated that all I remember at the end is whether the food was good or ,not so much! The specific dishes or at least the nuances of them kind of get lost, this would have been a shame.

It was all about liberties, freedom of expression and upon whom one infringes while expressing oneself, responsibilites of that, being too politically correct, or not being sensitive enough. And it all happened before the the downpour began!

what is a divan?

In India a divan or diwan is a council or assembly of leaders – and sometimes refers to the council chamber itself.  It comes from a middle eastern word meaning “bundle of written sheets, small book or collection of poems.”
